Developing Mutually Beneficial Interactions Between Secondary and Tertiary Education

The NSW secondary and tertiary education sectors operate in almost entire isolation of one another. However, they are two adjacent components of an education continuum for many students. The recent Australian Universities Accord includes a call for up to 80% of Australians to undertake tertiary education by 2050. If this vision is to be realised, the importance of the pathway between high school and university is set to grow. The tertiary education sector relies heavily on high schools to prepare students to suitable level of proficiency for ongoing learning. Any under-preparation of incoming students -or failure to meet incoming eligibility standards- carries significant costs for universities. However, there is little evidence of universities actively engaging in opportunities to optimise high school educational outcomes. This keynote presentation will describe the incentives for increased university engagement with NSW high schools and explore opportunities for mutually beneficial interactions between the sectors.
